From Multiversal Omnipedia
Big Daddys, also known as Protectors, are a type of character that features in the game BioShock.
Background
The Big Daddys are the large monstrous defenders of the Little Sisters. They appear as enormous diving suits that carry either a large drill or a rivet gun; in addition to this, they are extremely powerful and strong. Despite that, they are relatively harmless unless provoked or if one of their charges are endangered.
The origins of these creatures comes in the underwater city of Rapture. They are actually Human beings who have their skins along with their organs grafted into the large diving suts. As part of the procedure, these individuals have their voice box's modulated and a change in their phermones. The latter of these is done so to attract the Little Sisters to them in order to better protect them from harm. Finally, a plasmid is injected within their bodies which makes them mindless drones and driven by a single task; the protection of the Little Sisters.
The Big Daddys are the brainchild of Dr. Suchong who realized that the Little Sisters were defenseless in their task of gathering ADAM and, therefore, something else was needed to protect them. Thus the solution of creating Big Daddys was decided but finding volunteers was difficult as the transformation into a Big Daddy was a one way process though Andrew Ryan stated that there would be no problem gaining individuals to be transformed into the hulking protectors.
These creatures altered Humans were outfitted with the lage diving gear that they were designed and programmed to wear. The addition of several types of plasmids increased the users strength as well as their agility but at the expense of their individuality. They no longer possessed a humanity or sanity to lose. This made them single minded in their goal of protecting the Little Sisters. They are quite capable of liftng heavy weights easily and their strong metal suits allows them to withstand a great deal of punishment - even resist the intense pressure present at 6 miles beneath the ocean.
The individuals present within the suits are capable of communicating through haunting sounds that are similar to whale calls. Howver, a number of lights are used to help determine the Big Daddys 'mood'. These are also used to ensure no civilian incidents occurs. Red and yellow lights suggest an agitated state while green means the Big Daddy us calm.
