Pilgrim (Wing Commander)

From Multiversal Omnipedia

Pilgrims are a Human derived species that feature in the Wing Commander movie.

History

Pilgrims were the first space explorers that would leave Earth and colonise the stars despite the great hardships they endured. In time, they would develop inherent skills that would further aid them in embracing space and were skilled navigators. However, in time a growing division would form between them and base line Humans. It is said that the Pilgrims spent so long in space that they had lost their Humanity and their heritage. This would result in the Pilgrim War.

The Pilgrims were known to chart even unstable quasars and were able to travel through them, something that the Terran Confederation was incapable of doing.

Despite the growing division between the Pilgrims and base-line Humans; there were occasions when the two would inter-breed with one another. It was impossible to distinguish them from an ordinary Human except for their inherent skills or identifier marks like certain forms of amulets that they wore.

Since the end of the Pilgrim War, not a single new quasar had been charted. In fact, no one had jumped a pulsar for forty years. Before that period, only Pilgrims were known to accomplish such a task. Many ordinary Humans were distrustful of the Pilgrims and stated that the Pilgrims did not think like Humans; that they lost their emotion and Humanity as they went through the stars.

By the year 2454, the race were considered a near extinct species.

Background

Pilgrims were a divergent breed of Humans that evolved among Mankind and possessed inherent skills that allowed them to explore space. It was said that when they first looked at the stars they felt it was their destiny to chart them and people often looked to their kind in exploration activities. They were the first Human space explorers and settlers and for five centuries they defied the odds as they embraced space and they were rewarded with the gift of a flawless sense of direction. They were ale to feel magnetic fields that were created by quasars and blackholes as well as negotiate through singularities. As such, they were able to navigate just the stars but the space-time itself.

Though these abilities seem to mimic that of the Navcom AI, it was infact the opposite. The billions of calculations each second necessary to lead through a black hole or quasar is the Navcom recreation of the mind of a single Pilgrim.

By embracing space, the Pilgrims had lost their Humanity and their heritage which resulted in them, in time, thinking themselves superior to mankind. It is said that in their arrogance, they chose to abandon all things Human and follow what they called a "destiny". Some claimed that the race believed themselves to be "gods". Paladin believed that the race were not gods but were touched by God.
